This Country is Banning Facebook for a month and Here is Why

In order to study how its citizens use the platform and how fake news and pornography spreads, Papua New Guinea is banning Facebook for a month in the country.

Sam Basil, the country’s Communication Minister said that “The time will allow information to be collected to identify users that hide behind fake accounts, users that upload pornographic images, users that post false and misleading information on Facebook to be filtered and removed.”

He also added that he was evaluating the possibility of creating a new social network exclusively for Papua New Guinea’s citizens.
